The last steppe
The Last Steppe is a documentary following Naranbadrakh Batkhuu (“Nara”), a Mongolian man who grew up among nomadic herders where horses symbolized freedom and identity. At eighteen, Nara’s world changed when he accidentally entered a horse slaughterhouse. That moment sparked a quiet revolution.
Years later, Nara founded Mongolia’s first horse sanctuary and is now working with politicians, monks, and elders to reawaken a cultural reverence for horses. The film follows his efforts to bridge rural values and urban modernity, including a campaign to establish an international World Horse Day by July 2026.
Through poetic reenactments, interviews, and moments of everyday life, The Last Steppe explores what’s at stake as Mongolia’s traditions collide with change. It is a story about identity, compassion, and our evolving relationship with the natural world.
